Directed by Roger Spottiswoode and starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Radha Mitchell and Chow Yun Fat, The Children of Huang Shi (to be released as The Children of the Silk Road in Australia) tells the story of a young British man leading 60 orphaned boys on an extraordinary journey across the snow-bound Liu Pan Shan mountains to safety on the edge of the Mongolian desert, during the Japanese occupation of China in 1937.
While the film was shot in China, Roger Spottiswoode sent the daily rushes to Digital Pictures in Melbourne where they were telecined and edited overnight, then posted on the internet so that he could view them via Podcast on location.
"It was a fantastic system. Unfortunately China censor everything; even the internet and Google so of course reels and DVDs take forever to arrive if they arrive at all! My editor Geoff Lamb, his Assistant Cleo Miles and Digital Pictures were instrumental in getting this film completed. They (Digital Pictures) provided us with two Avid cutting rooms, an office and all the technology required to Podcast the dailies and then edit the completed film once we had all arrived in Australia", commented Spottiswoode.
The film hits Australia screens 29 May 2008.
